BOWLING - WILLOWBRAE CLUB'S INNOVATION, RINKS OF LADIES
In showery weather this afternoon Willowbrae Club opened their well appointed green of three rinks. Introduced by Mr. W Hamilton, president Mr. W. McCririe, banker declared the green open and threw the first jack. In performing this ceremony he remarked that he understood that this was the first club in Edinburgh that had admitted ladies to membership, and he trusted the experience would be a success. The company which was then photographed, included about forty ladies and in the ensuing match between the president and the vice-president (Mr. J.C. Henderson) one of the games was engaged in rinks of ladies skipped by gentlemen.
Jay Jay writes:
I do not know if, hitherto, ladies have ever taken any part in the game. Is there any reason why they should not be introduced to it? Now that the season is opening the time may be opportune to raise the question. One thing I should like to point out: The men frequenting our greens are drawn largely from the working class. Their wives are often slaves and drudges, whose lives are grey and routine. To them golf, cycling or tennis are much too strenuous; but the quieter game, Bowls would provide a pleasant change and recreation. Many of the P.S.A s of the City have clubs. Why should they not give a lead?
