By Command
The office bearers of 1923 had nothing of the old man’s game approach to bowls as they sponsored a boy’s section, and from this junior innovation, W.D.Salmond, four times green champion, was a notable graduate. Oldest member is Willie Moncur one of three brothers who are all on the roll. Willie joined in 1910 and has resided in a house in Baronscourt Terrace overlooking the green since 1909.
Another old member Willie Wright recalled to me how residing in the immediate proximity to the green involved him in games which he had not intended taking part in. It happened on several occasions he played by command when members shouted for him to come down and complete a rink.
Willie has been a good servant of the club acting as treasurer for 12 years; he also did a spell of secretary and match secretary and was president in 1939.
The strong family link in the club was responsible for a real long shot coming up one season in the rink competition, when the three brothers Moncur and their father came out of the hat to complete a quartet - William, sen. and jun. Jim and Peter.
Tommy Duncan, the present Edinburgh and Leith B.A.secretary, is another who has done his stint, completing 10 years as official scribe after holding the chair in 1943, and he has also co-operated in bringing playing honours to Willowbrae.
Costly Job
The officials have never grudged paying out money to improve the amenities and playing facilities. Last year the re-laying of the upper green cost the club four figures and a good bit.
In the season now rapidly coming to a close Willowbrae have enjoyed a splendid measure of success. Mrs D.Lyall won the Steel trophy which carries with it the single handed championship of the Women’s Association; Willie Wood proceded triumphantly through the Tait tournament and to crown their achievements Willowbrae broke through in the four club Steel Trophy rink competition for the first time.

They have a lot to live up to at Willowbrae.
